As the lost instructional time due to the recent late bout of winter storms demonstrates the necessity, Keller district officials are planning later bad weather make up days for the 2015-16 school year.
KISD trustees approved next year’s calendar at the February 19 board meeting, and a big part of the reason for the later-than-usual adoption was because of difficulties determining bad weather make up days, said Dustin Blank, executive director of leadership.
Keller schools were closed Feb. 23 and 24 and March 5 for wintry weather. The district’s first bad weather day for 2014-15 had already passed on Feb. 16. The second bad weather day, April 6, will be used to make up one day. Officials haven’t decided what to do about the other two lost days. The last few times KISD has closed for more than two days, officials have applied for a waiver from the Texas Education Agency so they don’t have to make up the extra days.
For 2015-16, the bad weather make up days are March 25 and June 3.

Next year’s holidays for students and staff include Labor Day, a week at Thanksgiving, two weeks over the Christmas/New Years holidays, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, March 14-18 for spring break and Memorial Day.
Days when students are off and teachers have professional development are Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Jan. 4 and Feb. 15.
Blank said that one change from this year is that early release days will be tweaked so that instead of all grades getting early release at the end of each six week grading period, the high schools will have early release on Jan. 14 and June 1 and kindergarten through eighth grade on Oct. 2 and April 15. All grades will have early release Dec. 18, Jan. 15 and June 2.
High school educators requested the extra time at the end of the semester to revert to a more traditional final exam schedule, Blank said.
