High school picks: Aftermath of a week of shockers

Byron Nelson’s Jordan Joiner and the Bobcats pulled off the upset of the year last Friday, shocking Euless Trinity.
Byron Nelson’s Jordan Joiner and the Bobcats pulled off the upset of the year last Friday, shocking Euless Trinity. Special to the Star-Telegram

When you take a risk, you never know how things will turn out.

In a couple of games last week, we took that risk and it didn’t go our way. We thought Hurst L.D. Bell would have a chance to steal one on the road at Flower Mound. Nope. We thought Northwest V.R. Eaton may have enough to beat Saginaw Chisholm Trail. Nope.

There’s really no in-between with risk. You’re either going to look really smart or you’re going to be really questioned.

Don’t forget, there was shock-the-world outcome when Northwest Byron Nelson upset then No. 10 Euless Trinity, 21-20, in overtime. The Trojans botching the extra point on their touchdown proved costly.

But we move on to the eighth week of the 2016 season. Keller Fossil Ridge has the bye.

Last week: 8-3

Season/Percentage: 64-13 (.831)

Saginaw Boswell (4-2, 3-0) at Justin Northwest (6-0, 3-0); 7 p.m. Thursday, Northwest ISD Stadium, Justin: The first matchup of two of the three District 6-5A undefeated teams. The Pioneers have benefited from a tough non-district schedule to put them in a good position in the district race. The Texans are scoring at will.

Prediction: Justin Northwest 45, Saginaw Boswell 27

Hurst L.D. Bell (2-4, 0-3) vs. Euless Trinity (4-2, 1-2); 7 p.m. Thursday, Pennington Field, Bedford: When this game was scheduled, everybody thought this would be automatic Trinity — again. After all, the Trojans have won the last 18 in this series. But this program is reeling. Has it lost its edge? The Blue Raiders, who desperately need this to keep playoff aspirations alive, hope they have.

Prediction: Euless Trinity 25, Hurst L.D. Bell 20

Birdville (3-3, 1-2) at Fort Worth Eastern Hills (2-4, 0-3); 7 p.m. Thursday, Clark Stadium, Fort Worth: It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Hawks, who have allowed 62 and 51 points. But they should rebound nicely in this one. The Highlanders just don’t have enough to stay with them.

Prediction: Birdville 56, Fort Worth Eastern Hills 7

Keller Central (2-4, 1-1) vs. Keller (1-5, 1-1); 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: Although the combined records of the Chargers and Indians is 3-9, they’re both in the playoff race. Keller’s defense has been very up and down. This team is coming off a bye. The Chargers have to put the tough loss to Abilene behind them. Flip a coin on this one.

Prediction: Keller Central 28, Keller 24

Grapevine (6-0, 3-0) at Richland (6-0, 3-0); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Birdville FA/AC, North Richland Hills: Is this good stuff or what? Two of the District 8-5A undefeated get together. Ged Cates has found a way for all of his skill players to blend together. QB Trae Self is having a great year. Grapevine’s defense has been pretty solid as well. And its offense has been playing exceptionally well.

Prediction: Grapevine 34, Richland 30

Fort Worth Polytechnic (1-5, 0-3) at Colleyville Heritage (4-2, 3-0); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Mustang-Panther Stadium, Grapevine: When the Panthers offense is right, it’s pretty explosive. Everybody was back last week for Birdville and put 51 on the board. The Parrots will be no match.

Prediction: Colleyville Heritage 56, Fort Worth Poly 7

Lewisville (3-3, 1-2) at Northwest Byron Nelson (1-5, 1-2); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Northwest ISD Stadium, Justin: Confidence can be the toughest thing to acquire in sports. Think how the Bobcats feel about themselves after they shocked Trinity. Suddenly, this is a game where there two teams could be battling for a playoff spot. Nelson really needs it because it still has to play Carroll.

Prediction: Northwest Byron Nelson 33, Lewisville 26

Carroll (5-1, 3-0) at Flower Mound Marcus (4-2, 2-1); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Marauder Stadium, Flower Mound: The Dragons will face a very explosive offensive team in the Marauders who have scored at least 37 points in five of their first six game. It will stress the Dragons defense. But Carroll may have found that extra gear. Its defense has been really good the last two weeks…well, the last six quarters.

Prediction: Carroll 45, Flower Mound Marcus 24

Haltom (4-3, 1-2) at Keller Timber Creek (4-2, 1-1); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: A game that’s going to determine if the Buffalos are going to be in the playoff race. They are done playing Abilene and Keller Fossil Ridge. Timber Creek still has to play Abilene. The subplot is whether the Buffalos can stay with a very dynamic offensive team. They’ve really struggled to do that.

Prediction: Keller Timber Creek 44, Haltom 33

Aledo (6-0, 3-0) at Northwest V.R. Eaton (1-5, 0-3); 2 p.m. Saturday, Northwest ISD Stadium, Justin: The state’s No. 2 Bearcats have been rolling through their district with little resistance and have won 64 consecutive district games going back to 2007. They’ve outscored their opponents 208-7. The Eagles are just struggling on defense.

Prediction: Aledo 56, Northwest V.R. Eaton 7

Let’s win them all!
