Why these kids told their mom not to get them anything for Christmas

When a pair of boys in fifth and sixth grade tell their mom not to worry about getting them anything for Christmas, it’s both encouraging and sad.

Louise is encouraged to see that her sons have developed some of the values she tries to teach them, and sad that they have to learn such things so early in life.

“I am very fortunate that they are so sweet and genuine,” said Louise, a single mom whose income doesn’t stretch far enough these days.

“I work hard every day to provide the necessities for them and they know I struggle from week to week to get bills paid,” Louise said. “So when the holidays come up It’s hard for me, because I just financially am not able to provide them with what I know they would like: a good Christmas gift.”

Without defining what a “good” Christmas gift would be, Louise said she’ll be happy giving her boys whatever warm clothes and shoes she can wrangle out of the $50 JC Penney gift cards from the Goodfellow Fund. This year’s $750,000 Goodfellow Fund goal is intended to serve 12,000 of Tarrant County’s school-age chidlren.

“As a parent you want to see big smiles on your kids’ faces on Christmas day when they open something from under the tree,” Louise said. “My wish is that one day, we can be wealthy enough to be able to help another family.”
