Rev. Sam Newman Jr. was all smiles Tuesday as he and several church members enjoyed Central Market’s annual Feast of Sharing at the Will Rogers Memorial Center.
“It lifts people up,” Newman said. “For those who don’t have anything, it lets them know all of these people have their backs. They aren’t alone.”
The holiday event, which was first held in Fort Worth in 2012, is hosted by Central Market’s parent company, H-E-B, in 27 Texas and six Mexican cities and is expected to feed more than 250,000 people this year. The event was also held last week at Fair Park in Dallas.
Besides getting a meal, visitors could get a flu shot, enjoy a children’s area and visit with 65 social service agencies that were on hand.
With the help of more than 1,200 volunteers, here’s how much food was served Tuesday:
9,250 meals served
2,500 pounds of sliced turkey breast
2,500 pounds of mashed potatoes
2,200 pounds of vegetables
2,000 pounds of cornbread dressing
2,000 pumpkin pies
200 gallons of giblet gravy
100 gallons of cranberry sauce
