Tarrant County College Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley is managing college district matters even as she deals with undisclosed health issues.

Hadley, 72, announced her situation after a TCC board meeting last month.

“I am a fighter, and I’ll fight this health challenge all the way,” Hadley said.

An email relaying the news was also sent to the TCC staff last month: “Chancellor Hadley shared news with the Board, the College leadership and the JCC that she has some health issues that she will be attending to in the coming days,” the email says. “Understandably, no other specifics were shared in respect for her privacy.”

Hadley is working on college district matters remotely. She could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

“As she addresses her health issues she will continue her work with the CELT and the Board of Trustees, thanks in part to technology,” the email says.

The CELT, the chancellor’s executive leadership team, is a body of college leaders that includes presidents of the district’s five campuses.

TCC board President Louise Appleman said Hadley is not on medical leave.

“She is undergoing treatment and is ‘in touch’ virtually — every day, every subject,” Appleman said.

Hadley was named chancellor in 2010, succeeding Leonardo de la Garza. She is the district’s fourth chancellor and the first woman and African-American to hold the post.

This report includes material from the Star-Telegram archives.

A Texas law preventing texting while driving went into effect in 2017. Since then, the number of deaths on Texas roads have gone down. Some say the new law may have led to the smaller number of fatalities.
