Community leaders including Fort Worth school trustees Christene Moss and Tobi Jackson and Tarrant County Commissioner Roy C. Brooks got on the “walking school bus” Wednesday as part of a youth fitness initiative.
The “walking bus” traveled about a half-mile in about 15 minutes from True Vine Missionary Baptist Church to Moss Elementary School. The event was intended to encourage parents and students to exercise by walking to school.
In 1969, 48 percent of students in kindergarten through eighth grades walked or bicycled to school, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The percentage dropped to 13 percent in 2009.
This is the second year Moss Elementary has partnered with Tarrant County Voices for Health and the TCU Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences to develop a Safe Routes to School program to make walking safer, more fun and convenient, according to a news release. — Caty Hirst
