Nolan Catholic baseball holds moment of silence for Jackson Weller
An arrest warrant has been issued for a man accused of fatally shooting a University of New Mexico baseball player from Keller.
The warrant identified the suspect as Darian Bashir, 23, who faces a charge of murder in the killing of 23-year-old Jackson Weller early Saturday outside of Imbibe Nob Hill in Albuquerque.
As of Friday, Bashir of Albuquerque had not been arrested.
Surveillance video showed a man, later identified as Bashir, walk up to Weller, pull a gun from his waist and shoot him once, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
Friends of Weller who were with him told detectives Weller had been in a fistfight with several people before the shooting, but Bashir was not one of them, according to the arrest warrant obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Friday.
The warrant gave this brief account of the shooting and Bashir’s criminal history:
After the minor scuffle, Weller was standing with his hands open and by his sides when he was shot by Bashir.
Bashir walked away from the scene and got into a vehicle which fled through an alley behind the club.
Several witnesses identified Bashir as the shooter, according to the warrant.
Bashir has an extensive history with Albuquerque police including multiple cases where he’s accused of violent felony offenses.
In February, a Bernalillo County grand jury indicted Bashir on eight charges ranging from shooting at or from a motor vehicle to two counts of aggravated assault. He also was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of marijuana, negligent use of deadly weapon and distribution of marijuana.
He was recently released from jail on his own recognizance.
In the murder investigation, Albuquerque detectives have documented social media postings where Bashir and associates appeared to flash gang signs and brandished numerous weapons.
Weller graduated in 2014 from Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, where he also played baseball.
