The official search for the next superintendent of Fort Worth schools is on again, with early August as the new deadline for the last interviews before a finalist is chosen, school leaders said.

“I think we’ll be very serious,” school board President Norman Robbins said. “We are ready to go.”

Trustees are expected to depend on the firm that conducted the previous search, Ray and Associates of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robbins said. On Wednesday, the firm started issuing fliers and advertisements to attract applicants, he said.

In its first attempt to hire a top administrator — Santa Fe, N.M., Superintendent Joel Boyd, 35 — crashed after a six-month search when he withdrew from consideration. Boyd had support from Robbins, but not from a majority of the board.

Board supporters admired Boyd’s commitment to educating socio-economically disadvantaged students and believed his energy could transform lagging test scores at some district schools. His critics on the board said he didn’t have enough experience to lead an 86,000-student urban school district. Santa Fe schools enroll fewer than 14,000.

The Fort Worth district has been without a permanent superintendent for almost a year.

Interim Superintendent Pat Linares, a former associate superintendent who retired in 2010, has been leading the district since former superintendent Walter Dansby abruptly resigned June 2.

The new search formally began Wednesday, Robbins said.

“This is still a very highly desirable place to be and always will be, and we want our public education system to add to this desirability,” Robbins said.

The deadline to submit an application for the job is July 13. By July 22, Ray and Associates is expected to nalize interview questions and procedures.

Interviews with prospective candidates are expected to begin July 27. A second round of interviews may begin the week of Aug. 3.

“It is expected trustees will announce a final candidate sometime after these dates,” according to the search timeline submitted to the board by Ray and Associates.
