Most people are probably familiar with the Heimlich maneuver. But if your dog began choking on an object, would you even know where to start?
The Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center posted a helpful graphic to its Facebook on Thursday, outlining four steps to a “Heimlich Maneuver for Dogs.”
As the post noted, “we all know dogs tend to eat things that they shouldn’t.”

- Hold the dog’s hind legs up with its head facing down, like a wheel barrow.
- Try to dislodge the object by sweeping from side to side in the dog’s mouth with your hand
- Deliver a “sharp blow” between your pet’s shoulder blades
- Compress your dog’s abdomen by pushing up with your fist.
