In most election ads, politicians voice their opinions and slam their opponents, but the ad for re-election of a Travis County commissioner has gone viral for its humor this election season.

As Gerald Daugherty rummages around doing household chores, he babbles on and on to his wife and friends about budgets and tax rates while they listen, appearing totally bored.

“Most people leave their work at the office,” his wife, Charlyn Daugherty, says unenthusiastically in the ad. “All he wants to do is fix things.”

She rolls her eyes frequently during the ad as he chats about how many people can fit in the jail while doing dishes and talks about public transportation at the dinner table.

“Please re-elect Gerald — please,” Charlyn Daugherty pleads at the end of the ad.

The video went viral online and has been viewed more than 1.7 million times on YouTube and more than 2 million times on Facebook.

Star Trek actor George Takei shared the video on his Facebook page, which has a following of more than 9.8 million people and said, “Ah, some welcome levity during this election cycle.”

Gerald Daugherty said he is glad the ad could bring some fun to the election season and thanked Takei for sharing the video.
