Arlington and Fort Worth are two of the worst places in the nation to party for New Year’s Eve, according to WalletHub’s “Best & Worst cities to celebrate New Year’s Eve.”
Arlington, the city that boasts home fields for the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers, was ranked 92 on the list of 100 while Cowtown came in at 96 because it lacked the right mix of party venues, affordable beverages and abundance of restaurants.
“There are a lot of quirky lists out there,” said Jessica Christopherson, director of public relations and film marketing for the Fort Worth Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are excited about new traditions like New Year's Eve in Sundance Square since the plaza opened two years ago.”
“Fort Worth and Arlington fell short in the number of places to go and things to do,” said Jill Gonzalez, spokeswoman for WalletHub, a personal finance website.
Orlando, Fla., came in first in the rankings, which are based on scores from an analysis of the 100 most populated cities. Metrics included New Year’s Eve popularity, legality of fireworks, number of New Year’s Eve festivals, average prices of New Year’s Eve party tickets and walkability.
Gonzalez said one metric used was the number of Year’s Eve festivals, big events or galas taking place. The two cities were on the “bottom end of night life options,” she said.
The average price of beverages also cost Arlington points. “Jerry World being in Arlington can’t help that,” Gonzalez said. The stadium’s CowboyRitas are priced in the double digits.
Despite the rankings, there are activities for revelers in Cowtown, including the free Sundance Square NYE Party complete with a countdown and fireworks, and the Bass Performance Hall Swingin’ New Year’s Eve, which features the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
In Arlington, many will be tuned to football. The Cotton Bowl begins at 7 p.m. There are also special dinners and parties promoted by the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau, including the Glitz & Glitter Party at Hooligan’s Pub.
“The good news is that Dallas fared better at 44th; it is still in the top half,” Gonzalez said, adding that the best Texas city this New Year’s Eve is Austin, which ranked 27th.
