Police are investigating the death of a toddler early Saturday that they say does not appear to be due to “natural circumstances,” Arlington police announced in a statement.

The incident occurred at the Las Lomas Apartments at 816 Timberlake Drive in southeast Arlington.

Aniyah Darnell, 2, died at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday in the emergency room of Medical City Arlington, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner.

Police responded to a call that the girl was not breathing at about 1:30 a.m.; Arlington emergency services took her to the hospital.

Detectives have interviewed several people who were either at the apartment or arrived there during the incident, police said. Two people, Shamonica Page and Derick Roberson, were arrested on out-of-town misdemeanor warrants.

“The investigation is ongoing to determine what exactly happened to the child,” police said.

Investigators are checking the apartment and a vehicle, and they will be present at the girl’s autopsy, police said.

Two other children at the home were put into the custody of Child Protective Services, police said.

Police say they don’t yet know the relationships between Aniyah, the other children and the other people present at the apartment.

The Tarrant County medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of her death, police said.

“More information will be released once it becomes available,” police said.
