Basketball game argument leads to fatal shooting in Arlington

An altercation during a basketball game at an Arlington park Sunday night apparently sparked a shooting that left one man dead, authorities said.

The victim, whose identity had not been released as of noon Monday, was driven by friends to Arlington Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries Sunday night, police said.

Police were summoned to the hospital about 7 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was playing basketball at Brantley Hinshaw Park, near the 2100 block of Overbrook Drive in east Arlington, when he got into an argument and pushing match with an unknown man. The victim and his friends were walking away when the man shot the victim, then fled on foot, police said.

Sgt. Paul Rodriguez, an Arlington police spokesman, said the altercation is believed to have been caused by something that happened on the court during the basketball game.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Arlington homicide detective Byron Stewart at 817-459-5691. Tips can also be made anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 817-469- TIPS (8477), which offers a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
