Girls basketball

Martin competed last week in the Fantasy of Lights tournament in Wichita Falls, picking up a 50-26 victory over Burkburnett in the consolation bracket after losing 41-31 to Plano Prestonwood Christian in the opener. The Lady Warriors were knocked out in the next game 50-45 by Mansfield Timberview.

They’ll play in the Northeast Lions Club tournament beginning Thursday in Haltom City, facing the likes of Richland, Birdville, Nolan and Keller

Arlington stumbled in two Tuesdays worth of nondistrict competition. The Lady Colts lost 53-35 to Irving Nimitz on Nov. 18 and 48-23 to Mansfield on Nov. 25. They’ll play at the Ennis tournament starting Thursday and wrap up nondistrict on Dec. 9, hosting Midlothian.

Sam Houston has struggled in nondistrict and enters the week with three games left to play before 4-6A competition begins. The Lady Texans visited Everman on Tuesday, after the press deadline, and still have Fort Worth Polytechnic and Colleyville Heritage before hosting North Crowley on Dec. 16 in the district opener.

Boys basketball

Arlington is off to a hot start in nondistrict, with wins against Dallas Molina (64-47) and Crowley (69-61) to go with a loss last Tuesday to Midlothian (61-46). The Colts will be in town in tournament play on Thursday.

Martin played in the Spring Creek Thanksgiving Classic, its home tournament, last weekend with results unavailable at press time. That came after a 74-54 loss on Nov. 22 to highly ranked Plano West in the season opener.

Bowie also lost its season opener, 74-55 to South Grand Prairie, but bounced back to pick up wins against Richland (64-57) last Tuesday and Crowley (57-47) last Friday. The Vols visited Seguin on Tuesday after the press deadline.

Lamar also got out to a 2-1 start to the season before tournament play. After defeating Keller Central 60-52 on Nov. 18, the Vikings lost to Euless Trinity (60-54) on Nov. 21 and picked up a win over Irving (72-49) last Tuesday. Lamar hosted Hurst L.D. Bell on Tuesday; see for results.
