The Bowie boys basketball team made a statement last Friday — but just barely.
Matched up against the only other undefeated team in district, the Vols edged Martin 55-53 to put themselves in sole possession of first place in District 3-5A entering this week.
David Chavlovich led the scoring with 21 points for Bowie, helped along by Brandon Hall (14) and Dante Hales (11). Before Tuesday’s action, played after the press deadline, Bowie remained undefeated with a 7-0 record at the halfway point in the district schedule.

Emerald Mayfield led Bowie with 17 points, with another 15 coming from Nia Roberts.
With just four games remaining after their post-press deadline match with Weatherford, the Lady Vols appear to be on the verge of a special season, as they’ve lost just twice all year, their last defeat coming in tournament play against Pflugerville in late December. Since then they’ve been dominant, holding Sam Houston to 23 points on Jan. 10 and Arlington to just 13 on Jan. 14.

• Lamar and Martin are also in the playoff hunt as the season enters the final stretch. Lamar visits Arlington at 6 p.m. Friday, while Martin hosts Weatherford at the same time.
