The Tarrant County Jail was examined by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and came back with no technical assistance needed, Republican Commissioner Matt Krause said during Tuesday’s meeting.

Krause clarified that no corrective action was needed from the inspection.

Krause thanked Shannon Herklotz, the executive chief deputy over the detention bureau at the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, for his “hard work.”

“We appreciate their technical perfection. It’s like its own city down there,” Krause said, encouraging all commissioners to tour the jail.

Judge Tim O’Hare shared that he was in the room when the inspection results were announced and the jail received a “glowing review.”

Krause said inspectors walked through the Green Bay Jail and the Lon Evans Corrections Center.

The Tarrant County jail has had a history of inmate deaths and has been sued by families of inmates.

At a county commissioners meeting in March, Sheriff Bill Waybourn said there was a 64.7% reduction in inmate deaths from 2020 to 2026. The number of deaths decreased from 17 in 2020 to six in 2025.
