A 4-year-old child has died after he was found in a pool in Arlington by his father on Sunday afternoon.

The child had to be rushed to a local hospital in Fort Worth when authorities arrived, according to Christopher Cook, a spokesman for the Arlington Police Department.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office later identified the child as August Smalley of Fort Worth.

Cook said officers were sent to the 7400 block of Lands End Drive, near the tip of Lake Arlington, at 4:13 p.m. on Sunday.

The father of the child was napping with a 3-year-old child downstairs in a home at the location while August was napping in his room upstairs, according to police. At some point, August awoke while the father was still asleep and went outside without his father knowing.

Police said August was found in the pool by his father when the father woke up. Cook said August was transported to Cook’s Children Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was later pronounced dead.

"We have a lot of investigation to do before we treat this as a medical call or criminal investigation.," Cook said in an email statement. "It’s way too early to generate a lot of facts at this point."

Cook said police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Lufkin, Texas, police arrested a father on injury to a child charges after they say he fell asleep after a night of drugs and drinking, and didn’t notice that his 3-year-old sneaked out of the motel room and drowned in the pool.
