Arlington council approves 67-lot upscale subdivision

Another upscale subdivision in southwest Arlington received preliminary approval from the City Council on Tuesday.

Developer Nathan Watson plans to build 67 estate-size houses at his proposed Calender Crossing subdivision.

The council voted 8-0 on first reading to approve Watson’s request to rezone 27.56 acres at 2504 W. Harris Road near Calender Road for the project.

Council member Michael Glaspie was absent.

The houses, which will be at least 2,400 square feet, will be built on larger-than-average lots of 11,500 square feet.

About 40 percent of the homes are expected to top 3,000 square feet and will feature three-car garages, said Jim Maibach, the developer’s zoning consultant.

The houses will start at about $350,000 and reach $450,000, Maibach said.

Councilwoman Sheri Capehart, who represents southwest Arlington, applauded the quality of the project.

“You have a really good vision for what this project can be,” Capehart said.

The developer proposed design features that exceed the city’s zoning requirements, such as minimizing the number of garage doors that face residential streets and installing decorative garage doors for those that do, said Jim Parajon, community development and planning director.

No one spoke against the project during the public hearing.

Watson has another upscale project in the works on the west side of U.S. 287 in southwest Arlington.

Last year, the council approved his rezoning request to build Eden Village near the Tierra Verde Golf Club.

Eden Village will be a gated subdivision featuring about 40 brick homes starting at $250,000. Expected amenities include green space, walking trails and a dog-friendly park designed to complement the golf course.
