New program meant to help chronically absent students

The school district is targeting its chronically absent youths through a new program in partnership with Tarrant County Juvenile Services.

The Attendance Improvement Project is for first- to eighth-grade students at five Arlington elementaries and two junior highs that were seen as having high chronic absence rates in the 2012-13 school year.

Chronic absence applies to those with more than 10 percent excused or unexcused absences.

The project, which will be implemented this month, will provide interventions ranging from transportation help to case management.

‘What’s your big idea?’ is theme of student contest

Third- through eighth-grade Arlington public school students are being asked to share their big ideas for the 2013-14 Entrepreneurship Contest.

The contest, an effort between the school district and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, is a chance for students to share their product or business ideas.

Third- through sixth-graders can submit artwork or original essays for their “ What’s your big idea?” entries.

Students with the top three essay and artwork entries will receive ribbons and be invited to attend Arlington Entrepreneurship Day at UT Arlington’s College Park Center on Aug. 26.

The winner will be announced at the event and receive a prize package with tickets to Six Flags Over Texas and Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, and a T-shirt and trophy.

Seventh- and eighth-grade students can participate in the Entrepreneurship Contest to share their ideas for a product for sale or a business to operate.

The top semifinalists will be recognized on stage at the Aug. 26 ceremony and will receive awards.

Winners in the top three places will receive a gift package much like the younger students but will get medals instead of trophies.

Students will step up to reading challenge Thursday

Birdville school district’s Elementary Battle of the Books competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the district’s Wiley G. Thomas Coliseum, 6108 Broadway Ave. in Haltom City.

All 21 elementary campuses will be competing for the championship trophy at this reading event.

Sail away on Valentine’s cruise on Lake Grapevine

The Valentine’s Cruise 2014 is a two-hour dinner featuring a three-course plated dinner, a live band and a comedy performance all set in the romantic moonlit atmosphere of Lake Grapevine.

Valentine’s movie night for families at The Pointe

The Keller Pointe is offering a fun way for families to enjoy their Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14.

Kids and their parents are invited to the Dinner and a Movie event from 6 to 11 p.m, an extended time from typical movie nights at the recreation center.

Kids can enjoy games, swimming, crafts, pizza and a movie while their parents can join them or enjoy the facility on their own.

Fort Worth orchestra will return for annual concert

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is returning to Keller for its annual concert March 1.

The Keller Public Arts Program is bringing the ensemble back for its fifth performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Keller High School Fine Arts Center, 601 Pate Orr Road.

Conductor Mischa Santora will lead the orchestra in works from Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Mendelssohn.

Tickets are $5 per person or $15 for four people and are available at the city Parks and Recreation Department, The Keller Pointe and the Keller Senior Activities Center.

Road closures affect traffic starting Monday

A section of Bancroft Road will be closed to through traffic starting Monday as workers repair a leaking 42-inch water line at the intersection of Bourland and Bancroft.

Bancroft Road between Bourland and Mount Gilead will be closed to all but local traffic for three to five working days.

Homeowners will still have access to their properties with signs directing through traffic to alternate routes.

Citizens Police Academy is planned

People interested learning from the inside how their Police Department works can enroll now in the Mansfield Citizens Police Academy.

Mansfield residents and local business owners are eligible for the program, which provides 36 hours of classroom and field instruction that includes a tour of the city jail, reconstruction of a crime scene and learning about hostage negotiating.

The course is taught in 12 three-hour classes from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays starting March 20. It’s the program’s 20th class since graduating its first in 1998.

An application can be downloaded under “News & Events” on the city’s website — — and emailed to officer Brandi Howard at by 5 p.m. on March 7.

Paper copies can be picked up at the Public Safety Building, 1305 E. Broad St., and submitted there or emailed to Howard. Mail must be post dated before the deadline, Howard said.

Enrollment is limited to 30 students, she said.
