BJ’s Wholesale Club building first Texas store in Fort Worth. See when it opens
BJ’s Wholesale Club broke ground Tuesday on a Fort Worth store that will be the company’s first in Texas.
The membership-based retailer, a competitor with Costco and Sam’s Club, is building the store along Altamesa Boulevard near Chisholm Trail Parkway in southwest Fort Worth. The $9.5 million store is expected to open in the spring with about 100 to 150 employees.
What is BJ’s Wholesale Club?
Like other warehouse stores, BJ‘s shoppers can buy products in bulk and gasoline at discounted prices compared to other retailers. The company has said it “consistently offers 25% or more savings on a representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries compared to traditional supermarket competitors.”
The 106,000-square-foot Fort Worth location will offer groceries, electronics, clothing, household goods and an array of bulk products. Shoppers can expect to find a deli, bakery and gas station. Membership prices start at $60 per year.
BJ’s head of corporate communications Kirk Saville said the company was drawn to Fort Worth because of the number of families concentrated in the area and the region’s continuing growth.
“We think our model is going to really, really work well for the community,” Saville said.

In the Metroplex, the warehouse retailer is concurrently building stores next to IKEA in Grand Prairie; along U.S. 77 in Waxahachie; and east of Dallas in Forney. All are expected to open in early 2026.
BJ’s will open in a competitive, growing retail environment. The nearest Costco is about 2.5 miles north of the new BJ’s, and a Sam’s Club is roughly 3.5 miles to the north. Target plans to build a $22 million store along Chisholm Trail Parkway about three miles south of the new BJ’s. H-E-B purchased property near the Target site along McPherson Boulevard in 2023, though the grocer has yet to announce plans to build a store there.
Costco, which is a larger company, has 39 stores in Texas, and Walmart-owned Sam’s Club has 82 Texas stores.
BJ’s Wholesale Club’s expansion into Texas is part of its rapid growth plan. The Massachusetts-based company expects to open between 25 and 30 stores over the next five years, including in Texas. BJ’s currently operates 255 clubs in 21 states.
The publicly traded company announced strong fiscal first-quarter earnings in May with comparable club sales (excluding gasoline) up 3.9% year-over-year, driven by growth in shopper traffic. BJ’s expects same-store sales to grow by 2% to 3.5% this fiscal year.
“We reported a strong start to the year, demonstrating the power of our model and continued momentum in our long-term growth priorities,” CEO Bob Eddy said in announcing first-quarter results. “Delivering great value is essential in today’s environment.”
BJ’s has about 7.5 million members. Opened in 1984, the company’s net sales were over $20 billion in the 2024 fiscal year.
