American Airlines said its passenger traffic rose 5 percent in August as the airline added 2.7 percent more capacity to its network.

The Fort Worth-based carrier said planes were more crowded in the last summer travel month with its passenger load factor up 1.9 percentage points to 86.5 percent.

American told investors that it expects its unit revenues to be down six to eight percent in the third quarter when compared to the third quarter of 2014 and estimates that its third quarter pre-tax margin excluding one-time accounting items will be between 16 to 18 percent.
