American Airlines said its passenger traffic dropped 0.8 percent in December as the airline added 0.5 percent more capacity to its network.
Planes were not as full during the holiday travel season as its load factor declined 1.0 percentage point to 80.6 percent.
American also increased its revenue estimates, telling investors that it expects total revenue per seat mile to be flat to up two percent for the fourth quarter, up from its previous estimate of down one percent to up one percent for the quarter.
Shares of American [ticker: AAL] were up almost two percent, trading around $49.33 at 9 a.m. CDT on Wednesday morning.
