The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded American Airlines authority to operate flights between Los Angeles and Beijing.
The Fort Worth-based carrier said it plans to start the new route in 2017 now that it has received government approval for the route. Delta Air Lines had also asked to operate the Los Angeles-Beijing route.
“This new service further underscores American’s commitment to providing customers with a world-class global network from our Los Angeles hub,” said American spokesman Matt Miller.
In March, American announced plans to operate the Los Angeles-Beijing route pending government approval and had expected to start the service in December. However, the new route won’t start until next year as the DOT route authority process allows for airlines to file objections through November before the route authority is finalized
