Southwest ground workers to protest airline’s award

Not everyone agrees that Southwest Airlines was the “Airline of the Year” in 2014.

Members of the Transport Workers Union Local 555 plan to protest outside of the Air Transport World awards dinner in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night where the Dallas-based carrier will receive the top honor from the magazine. The union represents about 10,000 ground workers at Southwest Airlines.

“Air Transport World says ‘excellent labor relations’ is one of the criteria for receiving this award,” said Southwest baggage handler Greg Puriski in a statement. “They never asked us, that’s for sure. If they want to have better labor relations, let’s settle the contract.”

The union and Southwest have been in contract negotiations since July 2011 with little progress in the contract talks. TWU Local 555 has held similar protests outside of the airline’s headquarters hub at Dallas Love Field.
