Bell Helicopter has been making helicopters in Fort Worth for decades.

And on April 23, 1974, the helicopter maker delivered its 20,000th helicopter to the U.S. Army. In advance of the milestone, the Star-Telegram went inside Bell’s main plant where the UH-1H Hueys were being constructed.

“Bell Helicopter which ranks with General Dynamics as the two largest employers in Tarrant County, now has a work force of more than 8,000 persons,” the article said.

The 20,000th helicopter was presented by Bell president James F. Atkins to Lt. Col. Joe W. Patton at the company’s main plant.
