Southwest Airlines says passenger traffic up 7.9 percent in September

Southwest Airlines said its passenger traffic jumped 7.9 percent in September as the carrier increased its capacity by 6 percent.

The Dallas-based carrier also reported a record load factor of 84.2 percent, up 1.5 percentage points compared to September 2015.

Southwest told investors it estimates its third quarter unit revenues will decline between 3.5 and 4.5 percent, with about 0.5 points of the decline due to the airline’s technology outage in July.

On Monday, Southwest reached a tentative agreement with its 200 aircraft appearance technicians. The proposed 5-year deal still needs to be ratified by employees and if it is approved, will last through February 2021.

“This agreement enhances pay and benefits for our employees, and it supports the company's long-term strategic business plan,” Southwest’ vice president of maintenance operations Landon Nitschke said.
