In May, 1959, Fort Worthians were excited to see American’s turbo-jet service to New York.
“The first American Airlines turbo-jet Electra service from Carter Field to New York will be started Sunday in true western style,” the article said, noting that Fort Worth Mayor McCann and Sheriff Wright “will lead a posse and stagecoach to the front of the plane.”
Capt. E. R. Perkins, who was piloting the first flight, was joined by Miss Texas Mary Nell Hendricks on the stagecoach that brought him ot the plane. Hendricks and the mayor then snipped a barbed wire fence enclosing the plane before the jet took off for New York.
