Three flights a day to Tokyo from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is enough.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that it will not grant American Airlines’ application for a new daytime route between DFW Airport and Tokyo Haneda, the airport closest to the city’s downtown.
Instead, the DOT granted the additional route to Delta Air Lines, which will operate the slot from its hub at Minneapolis.
“The availability of daytime access to Tokyo’s centrally located Haneda Airport will create more choice and convenience for both business and leisure travelers, and advances the Department’s work to increase competition and bring enhanced service options to the marketplace,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Four existing nighttime routes between the U.S. and Tokyo Haneda will move to daytime slots in October, the DOT said. American Airlines will continue to operate its Los Angeles-Haneda slot. United Airlines currently operates San Francisco-Haneda and Delta also operates a Los Angeles-Haneda route. Hawaiian Airlines operates a flight between Honolulu and Tokyo Haneda.
“American is pleased to have been awarded a daytime slot pair to continue our Los Angeles-Haneda service, but we’re disappointed our proposed Dallas/Fort Worth service wasn’t included in the Department’s primary allocation,” American spokesman Matt Miller said. “Dallas/Fort Worth’s proven local demand and its superiority as a connecting point for more U.S. passengers across the country make it the ideal central U.S. gateway to Haneda.”
In its order, the DOT said that if Delta deviates significantly from its proposed Minneapolis-Haneda route, the government will assign the daytime slot to American’s proposed DFW-Haneda route.
Currently, DFW Airport has three daily flights to Tokyo Narita, with two operated by American and one operated by its Oneworld alliance partner, Japan Airlines.
Earlier this year, the DOT awarded an additional nighttime slot to Hawaiian Airlines to operate a flight between Kona, Hawaii and Tokyo Haneda.
As part of the slot allocation announced Wednesday, the Transportation Department denied United’s request for an additional flight between Newark and Tokyo Haneda and Delta’s request for a route between Atlanta and Tokyo Haneda.
