REI adventure store planned for new Southlake shopping center

Seattle-based REI, one of the nation’s largest consumer cooperatives, plans to open its first Tarrant County store next fall when the Park Village shopping center also opens at the southwest corner of Southlake Boulevard and Carroll Avenue.

REI Southlake will sell top brands of outdoor gear and apparel for camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling and travel, the retailer said. The 22,050-square-foot store will also feature a bike store for assembly and repairs.

REI also has stores in Dallas and Plano. Anyone can shop at REI, but members who pay a one-time $20 fee receive a share in profits through an annual member refund. They also receive discounts on trips and classes.

More than 12,000 members live within 15 miles of the planned Southlake location, and Dallas-Fort Worth has about 71,000 members, REI said. The retailer has 5.1 million members nationwide who shop at 133 stores in 33 states.

“With a third location, we can better deliver the best gear and advice to even more customers and members who enjoy the outdoors,” Janet Hopkins, REI retail director for the Southwest district, said in a statement.

REI will hire about 50 employees for the Southlake store. Candidates can sign up online to be notified when the location begins accepting applications.

Park Village is an 18-acre development by Fort Worth-based Woodmont Co. that will open in fall 2014. The shopping center, near Southlake Town Square and Central Market, will have 185,000 square feet of shops and restaurants, according to its website.
