GameStop CEO Paul Raines, who had a small cancerous tumor removed from his brain in 2014, has had a recurrence of his medical issue and is seeking treatment, the company said Tuesday.
The board has appointed Executive Chairman Dan DeMatteo, a co-founder who preceded Raines as CEO, to serve as interim CEO of the Grapevine-based video game and electronics retailer.
“We continue to send our best wishes and strong support to Paul and his family,” DeMatteo said. “The board of directors has tremendous confidence in GameStop’s executives and the management team’s ability to effectively run the business with the board’s support.”
Raines, 53, has been CEO since 2010. In recent years, he has led a diversification of the video game retailer, adding a chain of AT&T Wireless stores and creating the ThinkGeek chain of collectibles stores.
