Strengths: Pierre-Paul has great quickness and athleticism. He ran a 4.71 in the 40-yard dash after weighing in at 270 pounds at the 2010 Scouting Combine. He also had a 301/2-inch vertical leap. Pierre-Paul is disruptive and a game-changer, as the Cowboys discovered the past four years. He had an interception of Tony Romo in 2012, returning it 28 yards for a touchdown. He has a variety of pass-rush moves, with good flexibility and balance. In 69 career games, he has 33 sacks. Pierre-Paul also has long arms — 343/4 — to bat down passes at the line of scrimmage.
Weaknesses: Injuries slowed him last season when he missed five games, but there are times he fails to have an impact even when healthy. He can disappear in stretches. He has not had a sack the past three games. Pierre-Paul still is a raw talent. This is only his eighth season of organized football, and he is only 25 years old. Pierre-Paul, who had only 19 reps in the 225-pound bench at the combine, still has room to get stronger.
Last week: He had no sacks and only one tackle in a 16-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Who has to stop him? Tyron Smith still is one of the best left tackles in football even if he hasn’t had his best season. He has allowed four sacks, according to STATS, Inc., and been called for one holding penalty and four false starts.
