NFL Insider: Charean Williams’ five cents

My five cents

1NFL players are exchanging jerseys after games every week, but one coach, Mike Tomlin, has ordered the Pittsburgh Steelers to stop. “We want a point of emphasis on winning games and not to trade apparel,” receiver Antonio Brown told Pittsburgh reporters when asked about Tomlin’s reasoning.

2Receiver Torrey Smith, in the final year of his rookie contract, surely doesn’t have the Baltimore Ravens eager to offer him a big deal. He has only 11 catches on 30 targets for 176 yards and a touchdown. Smith also has three drops this season, tying for seventh-most in the NFL, but he has drawn an NFL-high five pass-interference penalties. At his current pace, Smith will finish with career lows in receptions (35), yards (563) and touchdowns (three).

3The St. Louis Rams lucked into Austin Davis, just like they did Kurt Warner a few years ago. Davis isn’t likely to duplicate what Warner did in his six seasons in St. Louis, but the Rams might have accidentally found their quarterback of the future with injuries to Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill. Davis, who was on the Rams’ practice squad last season, has thrown for 702 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions the past two games. Bradford has only three 300-yard passing games in 49 career starts. The No. 1 overall pick in 2010 might have played his final game in St. Louis.

4Devin Hester signed with Atlanta seven months ago, but the debate continues in Chicago about his departure. The Falcons have found a role for Hester on offense, and he is the only player in the NFL with touchdowns as a receiver, a rusher and a returner.

5Geno Smith talks a good game, but he has completed only 58.1 percent of his passes with four touchdowns, six interceptions and a 69.3 passer rating. Yet, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan insists he’s not ready to permanently bench the second-year quarterback in favor of Michael Vick.
