TCU senior Stefanie Tan and North Carolina sophomore Hayley Carter had never played together until this week, but the partnership proved formidable.
Tan and Carter defeated former Nebraska All-American Mary Weatherholt and UCLA junior Catherine Harrison 6-3, 6-3 to win the Holt Fiat Women’s $10K Pro Circuit tournament Saturday afternoon at TCU.
Harrison and Weatherholt were trying to win back-to-back Pro Circuit doubles titles, after winning in Austin last weekend.
“We started off really shaky in our first match earlier in the week,” said Tan, a Singapore native who won 31 matches last season for TCU and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. “We really didn’t know anything about each other. After that first match, we just started playing really well together, and today she played great. We really complemented each other so well.”

And the tournament isn’t over for Carter, who defeated 17-year-old Jessica Ho of Wexford, Pa., 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to Sunday’s singles final.
Carter, who finished last season ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will meet former world No. 64 Tatjana Maria of Germany, who beat Giuliana Olmos of Mexico 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
The final is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at TCU. Admission is free.
