Dream come true
Dan Bailey fulfilled one of his lifelong dreams this off-season and, no, it wasn’t the seven-year, $22.5 million contract he received for being one of the top kickers in the NFL. Bailey’s highlight of the off-season was flying with the Navy’s famed Blue Angels at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. It was an experience of a lifetime for him as he estimated the G-force at approximately 7.3 or 7.4 and reached supersonic speeds.
1The G-force: “We weren’t wearing G-suits, so it was full-on. They have this thing called the ‘hick maneuver’ where you basically flex your entire body and breathe in air and exhale really fast and breathe in some more. You just have to keep the blood in your head because 5, 6, 7 G’s, all the blood is going right down to the lower body, so it’s pretty intense.”
2His heart rate: “It was pretty high. It was a really cool experience and it was really cool to talk to those guys. I know Jason [Garrett] is really big on kind of learning from guys at the top of their field at all different levels and all different professions.”
3Any relation to football? “They do a lot of visualization and a lot of the work that I like to do. It’s not like they just hop in the plane and go fly. Just the minute details they do, I thought it carried over for me.”
4Going supersonic speed: “It was crazy. I thought it’d be more eventually when you actually pass through the speed of sound barrier, but nothing happened. It was just like, ‘All right.’ ”
5Overall how it felt: “I’ve always wanted to know what that felt like and I’ve always had a passion for aviation and that kind of stuff, so I was just excited. There was never a feeling of fear that came over me.”
New tight ends coach Mike Pope has already made his presence be felt in camp. He’s having his squad go through unique drills, and veteran Jason Witten is loving every minute of it.
Pope, 72, had the tight ends go through an end zone catches drill on Friday where one guy would hold the feet with another laid across him.
“I’ll do them as long as they throw those touchdown throws,” Witten said, smiling. “It’s unbelievable. He’s like the Godfather, I swear. It never ends. It just continues to go.
“I’m fortunate to have him come at this point in my career and teach me. There are a lot of good tight ends out there and he believes I can be the best. We’re going to work our tails off to do that.”
Jerry Jones, along with the Mayor of Oxnard, Tim Flynn, were the featured speakers during an official training camp kickoff ceremony before Saturday’s afternoon practice. A fan yelled out to Jones, “Bring us a Super Bowl!” Jones’ response: “We’ve got a lot of hard work to do and I heard, ‘Bring us a Super Bowl.’ And It starts right here in Oxnard.”
Quote of the day
“It’s good. Just a little old man pain here and there.”
