Rangers promote Patrick Cantwell to big-league camp, other moves

Minor-league catcher Patrick Cantwell has impressed enough people within the Texas Rangers’ organization that they feel he belongs in big-league camp.

The Rangers transferred Cantwell to the major-league clubhouse, sending catcher Jose Felix back to minor-league camp. It was among three moves the Rangers announced Friday. They also announced that infielder/outfielder Alex Castellanos was claimed on waivers by the Padres after being designated for assignment to clear a spot for Joe Saunders, and right-hander Matt West has been optioned to High A Myrtle Beach.

Cantwell, the third-round draft pick in 2012, joins J.P. Arencibia, Geovany Soto, Robinson Chirinos and Brett Nicholas as the catchers in camp.

“We’re continuing to take a look at the next two lines of defense from a catching standpoint as we anticipate the need for those throughout the course of the year,” assistant general manager Thad Levine said of Cantwell. “And also looking to the future. Our minor league catching coaches think extremely high of him and feel that his catching skills are extremely advanced.”

Manager Ron Washington said he’s heard great things about Cantwell from the minor league coaches.

“So we decided we’d take a look just in case. You never know what might happen,” Washington said. “We might need him in an emergency. And one thing they say about this kid is he’s prepared and he can catch.”
