Mavericks survive scare in Cleveland

When the book is written on the 2013-14 season, a chapter will undoubtedly be reserved to discuss the Dallas Mavericks’ propensity for living on the edge.

The Mavs put their daredevil lifestyle on display again Monday afternoon against Cleveland. The visitors from North Texas built a 24-point lead, then, as is their custom, had to wobble a bit before pulling out a pulsating 102-97 victory over the Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena.

While winning the opener of a three-game road trip, the Mavs improved to 25-18 and the Cavs dipped to 15-26. But when this one ended, it was difficult to tell if these teams belonged at different ends of the NBA spectrum.

Even owner Mark Cuban said: “We do our best to give the fans their money’s worth.”

When Shane Larkin drained a 3-pointer with 50.6 seconds left before intermission, the Mavs were coasting beautifully with a 59-35 lead, thanks to 14 points from Shawn Marion and 11 from DeJuan Blair.

But as the case has been for most of the season, a switch gets flipped and soon afterward the Mavs are in a fierce battle.

On Monday, the Cavs buckled down and a 3-pointer by Luol Deng got Cleveland within 91-89 with 3:25 remaining. From there, Monta Ellis made 5-of-8 free throws, assisted on a basket to Marion and Jose Calderon added a bucket as the Mavs narrowly escaped one of the NBA’s worst teams.

“That’s what we do,” said Dirk Nowitzki, in reference to testing fans’ patience. “We make things interesting down the stretch.

“We seem to never really get to pull away at the end and make it an easy night.”

The Cavs fought to the bitter end, but the Mavs should have put them away much earlier. And they might still be playing if not for a bonehead play by Cleveland.

After Ellis missed a pair of free throws with 3.4 seconds left and the Mavs up 100-97, Jarrett Jack attempted to inbound the ball. But while being face-guarded by Brandan Wright, Jack failed to get the ball in and was whistled for a 5-second violation.

Ellis then knocked down two free throws with 1.1 seconds left to seal the win for the Mavs, who play at Toronto on Wednesday.

“It’s the NBA, it’s supposed to get hairy,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “I’d love us to hit every shot and get every stop, but on the road, teams battle back if they get behind. And we did a good job holding them off.

“It got to two [points] and we had to get a couple of stops and score. And look, we got it done, so that’s what it’s about and we’ll keep working to do better.”

Ellis led the Mavs with 22 points and eight assists, Marion added 18 points and Nowitzki had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“I thought Marion had the biggest impact tonight on our team,” Carlisle said. “His activity, he was playing extremely hard, his shot-making was there, defense, rebounding.”

Marion had eight points in the first period when the Mavs built a 30-23 lead. He also was in the middle of a 38-14 rally by the Mavs that helped build the 24-point advantage.

The Mavs then had to hold on despite losing center Samuel Dalembert, who did not return after leaving early in the third quarter with a strained left shoulder.

“I think we came out with a lot of energy, got a lot of deflections and got out and ran and we made baskets,” Ellis said.

And on nearly blowing the seemingly comfortable lead, Ellis added: “ ... But we came out with the win.”

Always with the drama.

For the Dallas Cowboys, a quick and stunning 21-0 lead over the favored Philadelphia Eagles apparently wasn’t theatrical enough.
