Reger Dowell came off the bench to score 16 points and grab five rebounds as UT Arlington held on to beat Texas State 56-48 on Saturday.
Lonnie McClanahan added 12 points for the Mavericks (7-10, 2-3 Sun Belt) and Jamel Outler scored 11.
The Mavericks began the game on a 10-2 run, but the Bobcats (5-13, 1-4) fought back to take a 24-22 lead on Phil Hawkins’ 3-pointer with 1:11 left in the first period.
The Mavericks outscored Texas State 16-8 early in the second half to go up 38-32 with 11:37 left to play.
The Bobcats came within two on a Wesley Davis layup with 4:23 to play before Dowell helped put it away for the Mavericks by going 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in the final 40 seconds.
“We took better shots in the second half,” UTA coach Scott Cross said. “That was the only thing we were doing wrong in the first half.”
Gordon Ball led the Bobcats — who have now lost five of their last six games — with 10 points and seven rebounds.
UTA returns home to face Troy at 8 p.m. Thursday at College Park Center.
