About the Mavericks: It’s regroup time for the Mavericks, who opened this two-game road trip Wednesday in San Antonio by getting drubbed by the Spurs 112-90. It was the largest margin of defeat of the season. ... Dirk Nowitzki is coming off his worst game of the season, scoring season-low eight points on 3-of-14 shooting. ... Friday starts a back-to-back away-and-home series with the Pelicans. The teams play Saturday night in Dallas. ...Nowitzki starred when the Mavericks edged the Pelicans in New Orleans 100-97 on Dec. 4. Not only did he score a team-high 21 points, but Nowitzki made 1 of 2 free throws to put the Mavericks up 98-97 with 32.3 seconds left. After that, Nowitzki blocked Eric Gordon’s floater, grabbed the rebound and made two free throws with eight seconds left.
About the Pelicans: New Orleans was dealt a serious blow Tuesday when it was announced that forward Ryan Anderson will be sidelined indefinitely with a herniated disk. Anderson, the Pelicans’ leading scorer (19.8 points per game) and third-leading rebounder (6.5 rpg), suffered the injury last Friday in Boston. ... The Pelicans have lost three straight. They got beat in Indiana (99-82) last Saturday, lost in Miami (107-88) on Tuesday and lost at home to Washington (102-96) on Wednesday, despite 27 points, seven rebounds and three blocks from Anthony Davis. ... Davis averages 19.2 ppg, 10.1 rpg and leads the NBA with 3.15 blocks per game. ... Eric Gordon averages 15.6 ppg, while Jrue Holiday is scoring at a 14.3 ppg clip and also averages 7.9 assists per game.
