The daily STEW (Star-Telegram Editorial Writers): Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, filed a bill to decrease the number of teams advancing to the playoffs from each University Interscholastic League district from four to two. Do too many high schools get the distinction of participating in the playoff? Or should the Legislature refrain from messing with Texas high school football?

Yes, I would say that too many teams go to the playoffs. But why does the Legislature need to deal with this? Alan Cochrum

Sometimes those noncompetitive teams win a playoff game or two. No system is perfect, but the UIL in Texas is the best such organization in the nation. Leave it alone. Bob Sonderegger

Every child playing football has a right to have a chance at a playoff game no matter how good or bad they are. It’s a big deal to these kids — they get to come and play playoff games in places like AT&T Stadium Texans love football no matter what your age might be. Sharon Pate
