The daily STEW (Star-Telegram Editorial Writers): Texas pays its public school teachers about $7,700 less than the national average each year. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says that’s “a very fair salary” when you account for a lower cost of living in Texas. Do you agree with him?
As a former teacher, I left the profession that I dearly loved because of a better opportunity (still in education) that had a higher salary and much better benefits for a single mom. Jessica Eakman Thomas
If teachers only had to work a 40-hour week, as in only 40 hours, or heck, less than 50 hours, then Dewhurst’s statement might be less offensive. Ask any teacher how much time they spend “after hours,” on weekends or on supplies for their own students out of their own pockets. George Gdovin
I think the people complaining that teachers aren’t paid enough should donate to pay teachers more. They obviously don’t need it. Sharon Hatfield King.
