The daily STEW (Star-Telegram Editorial Writers): Leaders of a student group at the University of Texas at Austin said their “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” game would spark a discussion. It also sparked controversy. Is it appropriate for UT?
OK, so the “game” has been canceled. For what it’s worth, I’d say “mission accomplished” in regards to raising awareness of the issue of illegal immigration and the impact it has on education in this country. Is it appropriate for UT? Is this still a free country, or not? Rob Turk
It was never appropriate to have scheduled it in the first place. Alex Guzman
They should not have canceled. Illegal immigration is breaking the back of this state financially and destroying our culture. It’s time to focus on this problem and save our sovereignty. Lesley Hensell Demond
Obviously it was developed by a Republican. Nuff said. Darrell Bartell
Even Greg Abbott called this a “repugnant effort.” Regardless of your stance on immigration, what YCT (Young Conservatives of Texas) organized is completely inappropriate.
Wasn’t there a game, back in the day, called “Catch a slave”? Mmmmm. Richard Mayo
I can’t think of a more appropriate place for creative discussion of the issues that affect our country. Lisa Kristoffer
Absolutely not. These are people, not feral cats. There has to be a better way to start a dialogue. Nancy Easley
It was in poor taste but not surprising [considering] which group dreamed this stunt up. Susan
It was rather sophomorish. It was a dumb, distasteful prank. Bob Sonderegger
