One dead following 18-wheeler crash in south Fort Worth

Officials are investigating whether a medical issue may have caused an 18-wheeler crash Friday morning that left its driver dead.

A witness told police that the 18-wheeler was north on Interstate 35W at the Interstate 20 mix master at about 9:30 a.m. when it traveled off the lane, crashed into a sign and dove into a drainage ditch. It came to rest in a jack-knifed position, said Officer Daniel Segura, a police spokesman.

Segura said the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver may have had a medical issue, causing the wreck.

“Nobody cut him off or anything like that,” Segura said. “There wasn’t a lot of traffic.”

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office as Ronnie Crowley, 61, of Fort Worth.

A cause and manner of death were still pending Friday afternoon.
