Today is the last day Texans may register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election.
State and local election officials say they hope anyone not already registered has time to sign up.
“Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility and we want to make sure all Texans have the information they need to know how, when and where to vote this fall,” Texas Secretary of State Nandita Berry said.
Statewide, 13.6 million Texans are registered to vote. And nearly 1 million of them — 997,620 — are in Tarrant County, according to local and state election records.
Local officials say they will keep the doors to the election center open late, until 7 p.m., to make sure voters have time to register.
“We are 30 days out and the deadline to register to vote has approached,” said Frank Phillips, Tarrant County election administrator. “Historically, we will have a last-minute rush of people signing up on the last day.”
To register to vote in Texas, a person must be a U.S. citizen and at least 17 years and 10 months old (and 18 by Election Day), cannot be a convicted felon (unless the sentence has been completed, including probation or parole) and cannot be declared mentally incapacitated by a court.
People who have moved or changed their name after they are registered must give election officials the new information.
Voter registration applications are available at subcourthouses, city halls, libraries and post offices as well as online through the Tarrant County Elections Office and the secretary of state’s office. They must be postmarked or dropped off at the election office — 2700 Premier St. in Fort Worth — by today.
“I am committed to making sure every eligible Texan has the information they need to register for this fall’s election,” said Berry, who has traveled around the state encouraging Texans to register to vote.
Early voting runs from Oct. 20 to 31.
