32 Star-Telegram journalists honored by Texas managing editors

The Star-Telegram’s Spanish-language newspaper, La Estrella, was named newspaper of the year for 2013 Saturday by the Texas Association of Managing Editors during its annual meeting on South Padre Island.

The newspaper is edited by Juan Antonio Ramos, who won second place for opinion writing. Lucía González of the La Estrella staff also won a second place, for feature writing.

The awards ceremony continued Sunday.

Also receiving honors this weekend in overall categories were the team of Bill Miller, Bill Hanna, Yamil Berard, Ron T. Ennis, Max Faulkner and Joyce Marshall, third place for star breaking news report of the year ( December ice storm paralyzes North Texas); and Deanna Boyd, Miller, Rodger Mallison, Kevin G. Hall, Marisa Taylor, Bud Kennedy and Sandy Guerra-Cline, honorable mention in the same category (for coverage of Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth).

The team of Anna Tinsley, John Gravois, Taylor Cammack, Mark Hoffer, Steve Wilson and Mallison received third place in star online report of the year ( 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination).

Other first-place winners from the Star-Telegram were design director Michael Currie, for news page design, and Marshall, for best video under two minutes. Currie won three awards.

In all, 20 Star-Telegram journalists were honored for their work last year in the largest division, Class AAAA.

The team of Currie, Wilson, Hoffer, Marissa Hall and Gravois, deputy manager editor for politics and government, received second place for page design, honoring their work on the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.

Currie, Wilson and Hoffer joined Clif Bosler and reporter Gaile Robinson to win third place in team page design for their work on the new addition to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth.

Senior photographer Paul Moseley was honored twice, winning a second place for best video under two minutes and a third place for feature photography.

Andrea Ahles, who covers aviation and American Airlines, won third place for business reporting; reporter Ryan Osborne won third place for breaking sports news; reporter Mac Engel won third place for best blog; and videographer Jared Christopher won third place for best video over two minutes.

Honorable mentions went to Terry Evans, Patrick Walker, Gordon Dickson, Jeremy Cannon and Clarence E. Hill Jr.

The Star-Telegram’s Caty Hirst was honored for her work last year at the Victoria Advocate. She was part of teams that won first place in star breaking news and star online report of the year and honorable mention for star investigative report of the year.
