Rabid skunk caught, killed in east Fort Worth

A wild skunk that later tested positive for rabies was captured Feb. 9 near the Oak Lake Park area of east Fort Worth in ZIP code 76103.

The skunk, which was killed for testing, does not appear to have infected anyone, officials said. But animal control officers cautioned people to not approach or attempt to handle any free-roaming, unfamiliar animals behaving oddly, according to a news release from the city of Fort Worth.

With the weather becoming warmer, hibernating wildlife are starting to roam and look for food. Vaccinations need to be updated for all dogs, cats and other domestic pets.

People should consider picking up pet food and birdseed left outside before nightfall.
