Arlington thoroughfare closed after water leak causes unsafe conditions

Water utilities crews continued to work Friday to repair a 42-inch leaking water line in the median of West Green Oaks Boulevard, just south of Arkansas Lane.

No disruption to water or wastewater services was expected, city spokeswoman Sana Syed said, but the heavily traveled thoroughfare will be closed for several days after the structural integrity of the pavement was compromised when soil sloughed off during the excavation process.

The pipeline has been out of service since Dec. 14, when a resident reported water trickling across the roadway. City officials believe that the days of subfreezing temperatures this month caused the ground to shift, rupturing the pipe. About 5,000 gallons of water is believed to have leaked.

Northbound traffic on Green Oaks is being diverted to Mayfield Road, Little Road, Arkansas Lane and then back to Green Oaks.

One lane is available for local traffic only. Crews placed message boards in the area to notify drivers.

“Green Oaks is expected to be closed northbound through next week,” Syed said Friday. “Both southbound lanes on Green Oaks should reopen by Christmas.”
