Eats Beat: Turkey dinners for $100, please — or closer to $10

You could spend a lot of money being thankful Thursday.

In Dallas, Fearing’s Thanksgiving dinner costs $100.

Near Glen Rose, the Rough Creek Lodge resort dinner costs $95.

In Grapevine, the Gaylord Texan ballroom buffet costs $73, or $86 with a ticket to “ICE! Featuring Frosty the Snowman.” (The Riverwalk Cafe buffet is cheaper.)

But most diners will count on turkey-and-dressing in a familiar cafe or diner.

“My customers wouldn’t know where to start looking to go if I didn’t open on Thanksgiving,” said Barbie Stanislawski of Barbie’s Colonial House Restaurant, a North Main Street breakfast and lunch buffet soon to be renamed Heaven’s Gate Restaurant.

“They count on me to be here. Some of them come every day. We’re here for them on Thanksgiving.”

Her turkey-and-dressing buffet will cost about $12-$13, including dessert. It’s a slight increase from the daily $10 lunch buffet or $9 breakfast buffet.

She just remodeled the restaurant, at 3820 N. Main St. on the corner at Northeast 38th Street, near Meacham Airport.

In January, she will rename the restaurant Heaven’s Gate, she said, because “God has given me so much to be thankful for.”

If you’d like to try it on a less crowded day, it’s open for breakfast and lunch daily (not dinner).

The lunch buffet typically offers chicken-fried steak, fried catfish, roast pork and meatloaf. There’s a breakfast buffet on weekends; 817-624-1262,

Turkey update

A late Thanksgiving idea:

La Choza Fine Food, a Santa Fe-style restaurant near Lakeside, will serve a $12 turkey plate or a choice of pork loin, prime rib or habanero-mango salmon. There’s also a fajita-enchilada combo; 7001 Confederate Park Road, 817-751-9060.

Also, barbecue lovers should consider Smoke, near Sylvan Avenue in west Dallas. Family-style turkey, prime rib or ham dinners with sides cost $30, 214-393-4141.

Post-parade dining

For some families, the Friday dining reservation is more important than Thursday’s.

The day after Turkey Day means downtown Fort Worth and dinner before or after the annual Parade of Lights.

Bird Cafe will add a Friday brunch for shoppers, and the Sundance Square Plaza restaurants are near the beginning of the parade, so they’ll be easy to access. Ask how if you plan dinner at Bird, Del Frisco’s Grille or Taco Diner.

Another choice might be in mid-parade at General Worth Square, where Little Red Wasp is open until midnight.

Chef Blaine Staniford comes off his appearance on Food TV’s Kitchen Inferno. His casual menu at the Wasp offers first-rate burgers ($9), salads, sandwiches ($12-$14) and a choice of eight entrees in the $20-$30 range.
