Social Eyes: Walk at Grapevine Mills on Saturday will support Easter Seals

Lace up those walking shoes Saturday and head out to Grapevine Mills mall to raise money for Easter Seals North Texas as the organization, which serves people with disabilities, observes a milestone 75th anniversary.

Families are invited to walk, stroll or roll the 1-mile lap in the mall and afterward enjoy activities planned for participants and spectators.

“We encourage individuals of all ages and abilities to join us for our annual Walk With Me. It’s a great opportunity for the entire family to put their steps toward raising support for individuals with disabilities in our community,” said Donna Dempsey, president and CEO of Easter Seals North Texas. “Plus, this Walk With Me will be extra special for all attendees as we will celebrate 75 years of serving North Texas.”

Kids will love a visit with an airbrush tattoo artist, as well as carousel rides and games. And birthday cake will be served. Vendors that offer services for the disabled will have information booths.

Be sure to get the scoop on how to sign up to partner with a Walk With Me honorary ambassador: a child or an adult with a disability who has benefited from Easter Seals North Texas’ services.

The walk begins at 8 a.m. at Entry 5 near AMC Grapevine Mills 30. Registration is $25 per adult, which includes a souvenir T-shirt. Children up to 12 years old can register for free.

Expo to showcase business community

Helping local companies build their business is what the HEB Chamber of Commerce is all about, and to that end another great expo is planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 7 at the Hurst Conference Center.

Jointly presented by the chamber and the HEB Economic Development Foundation, the daylong event will showcase more than 90 exhibitors displaying their products and services. A home improvement aisle is planned along with an impressive auto display.

Guests will enjoy complimentary food samples as they stroll through the aisles to visit local retailers, service companies and nonprofits. Serving up tasty samples from their menus will be Miz G’s House of Pies, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Sweet P’s Cafe & Catering, and Miguelito’s Mexican Restaurant.

“Expo is a great place to see what products and services are available in the HEB area and meet the representatives of companies that provide them,” HEB chamber President Mary Frazior said.

Old Bags Luncheon set for March 19

Old Bags Luncheon coming up on March 19 at Shady Oaks Country Club is far from what the name suggests; there will be nothing frumpy about it. Instead, undying elegance and timeless fashion will be the order of the day when guests are wowed by the sight of nearly 200 gently used designer and vintage purses in an auction benefiting the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.

Fashionistas will be in handbag heaven as they browse the silent auction offering designers such as Prada, Chanel, Bottega, Fendi, Gucci and Marc Jacobs, all available at a fraction of their retail cost. Friends of the museum have donated these luxury purses, which once had price tags of $200 to $4,000.

An exciting program will feature banking executive Elaine Agather as she interviews Neiman Marcus CEO Karen Katz. She will share behind-the-scenes experiences from her career with the Neiman Marcus Group, where she once headed the handbag division and succeeded in negotiations for Neiman Marcus to be the first U.S. retailer to sell Prada handbags.

“Elaine Agather and Karen Katz illustrate the cowgirl spirit,” said Patricia Riley, executive director of the museum. “These inspiring role models personify our mission to honor the women whose lives exemplify the courage, resilience, and independence that helped shape the American West.”

Co-chairwomen of the event are Kit Moncrief and her daughters , Gloria Moncrief Holmsten and Adelaide Moncrief Royer, along with Elaine Agather and her daughters, Lorene Agather and Bradley Agather Means.

The Road Home Tours

The Arlington Life Shelter does far more than provide a place to sleep for homeless people. The agency provides a plethora of services not just to individuals but also for entire families as they deal with the homelessness.

While offering a safe place to stay, the Life Shelter helps residents in their search for employment so they can transition back to self-sufficiency and try to end the cycle of poverty they are experiencing.

For a firsthand look at how the shelter operates, anyone in the community is invited to tour the shelter facility during the day while shelter residents are at school and work. The shelter’s staff will share stories and show video recordings of personal testimonials from former residents.

“I love introducing guests to the Arlington Life Shelter through the Road Home tours. Once we get people in to see how welcoming the shelter is and how much our homeless clients are able to accomplish, they want to become involved,” Executive Director Becky Orander said. “There’s just something that tugs at your heart when you see the many ways you can help others get back on their feet.”
