Here’s what’s new in bookstores this week:
•The Invention of Wings
by Sue Monk Kidd (Viking, $27.95) — The author (a TCU grad) follows her bestselling debut novel, 2002’sThe Secret Life of Bees
, and 2005’sThe Mermaid Chair
with the newest selection in Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. It’s about two strong 19th-century women: one wealthy (Sarah Grimké, a real-life abolitionist and suffragette), and one a slave in the Grimké’s Charlestown household. •In the Blood
by Lisa Unger (Touchstone, $25.99) — The bestselling author (Heartbroken, Smoke
) has created a pathological liar as the main character in her latest psychological thriller. Lana Granger has told so many lies in her life that even she is having trouble discerning fact from fiction. She’s a psychology major, nearing graduation and in need of money, who takes a job as a nanny for a troubled boy. But this youngster has a dangerous side and knows a little too much about Lana, who’s also a suspect when her roommate goes missing after the two had a fight.
•The Last Dead Girl
by Harry Dolan (Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam, $26.95) — The author first presented David Loogan inBad Things Happen
(2009) andVery Bad Men
(2011). His latest is billed as a prequel toBad Things Happen
and reveals David’s dark past. (He’s David Malone in this one, lives in a different town, has a different job and is 26.) When a chance encounter and brief affair with law student Jana Fletcher gets him implicated in her brutal murder, David is determined to solve it, but her killer is keeping close tabs on him.
