A great chance for young professionals in their 20s and 30s to network and learn more about the serious issue of poverty in our community comes up Wednesday. Catholic Charities Fort Worth’s Need YPO will host Lunch & Learn from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Catholic Charities campus, 249 W. Thornhill Drive.

Guests will get an overview of poverty in Tarrant County and hear a talk from Catholic Charities Fort Worth CEO Heather Reynolds introducing the organization’s new pilot study on poverty-ending efforts. They will also tour the campus.

Lunch is free for Need YPO members and $15 for nonmembers. To learn more, visit catholiccharitiesfortworth.org/needypo or make reservations at goo.gl/KI040x. Contact Kate Blackburn at kate.blackburn@ccdofw.org with questions.

Congratulations to the Fort Worth Moslah Shrine on its 100th birthday, which will be celebrated in grand style at a black-tie ball on Jan. 25 at the Hilton hotel.

Shriners in formal attire including a jeweled fez will enjoy seeing dignitaries and new officers introduced under an arch of swords held by veterans in full dress uniform comprising the Legion of Honor Corps.

Video presentations throughout the evening will highlight events in the 100-year history and feature interviews with past leaders or their widows and a proclamation presented by Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. Master of ceremonies is Gary Hawkins.

Said to Shriner Ken Sapp: “The Moslah Shriners have a rich and colorful history of fun and philanthropy. They are recognized for their circus, colorful parades and civic participation. Shriners are often noted as the world’s greatest philanthropy for their support of 22 children’s hospitals [that] serve children regardless of race, creed or ability to pay.

“Moslah Shrine supports our philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children, with numerous fundraising efforts such as our gala, golf tournament and, of course, our most visible effort, Street Corner Collection Day,” said Sapp.

Northeast Tarrant

Grapevine Fillie Trot

Keep those resolutions for getting physically fit in 2014 alive by signing up for the Jan. 25 Fillie Trot at Grapevine’s Oak Grove Park.

The 5K is on a certified course for the serious runners, but there’s also a 1-mile fun run and a doggie trot for those of us not ready for a longer run. The event is hosted by the Fillies Booster Club of Grapevine High School.

Working hard to organize the Trot are drill team boosters Jason Steinle, Jerry Schmidt, Susan Hamilton, Ron Allen, Don Davis and Ann-Marie Allen.

Runners will start at 8 a.m. Bring a little money to participate in the raffle so you will have a chance to win gift cards and other great merchandise.

“The GHS Fillies would like to welcome all area runners/walkers in our 14th annual Fillie Trot. Come on out and join our community fitness event. We look forward to seeing you,” said Steinle.

Registration is $20. Recommended early registration is at www.active.com (search for Fillie Trot) or you can sign up at the event. Details at www.ghsfillies.org.

A celebration of French music

Apex Arts League invites the community to enjoy a Sunday afternoon of French chamber music on Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Southlake.

With chamber music from different French periods, the program will include the music of Caude Bolling, Lili Boulanger and François-Joseph Garnier.

Musicians are from the Fort Worth Symphony, Dallas Opera orchestra and University of North Texas faculty. “A sextet including piano, winds, brass and strings contributes to a wonderful mix of instrumental color on this program,” said spokesman Blake McKinney.

Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for Apex members, seniors and students. For more information, visit www.apexartsleague.org or contact Apex at info@apexartsleague.org with questions.

Arlington

Who will be the next Teen, Miss and Mrs. Arlington International?

Applications are now being accepted for the titles of Miss Teen Arlington, Miss Arlington and Mrs. Arlington International 2014. They will have the honor of representing their area at the Texas International Pageant set for on March 14-16 at the Granville Arts Center in Dallas.

According to a news release, no previous pageant experience is necessary, and there is no talent or swimsuit division. Married women compete in interview, fitness wear and evening gown, where they are escorted by their husbands on stage. Teen and miss contestants compete in interview, fitness wear and evening gown, as well as “fun fashion,” a category devoted to showing off their own personal style in an age-appropriate outfit of their choosing.

Winners will receive a prize package valued in the thousands of dollars and the opportunity to represent Texas at the 2014 Mrs. International, Miss International or Miss Teen International Pageant in Florida in July.

The deadline for applying is Feb. 7. To request an application, contact Rachel Hedstrom at texasinternationalpageant@gmail.com. Details at www.mrstexasinternational.com.
